Blessed Eid العيد المبارك
Eid-al-ahda has come and gone here in the Middle East, and for Muslims worldwide! Unfortunately, 700+ people died on pilgrimage to Mecca in a stampede of people. This is not the highest number of people that has died in one year’s worth of pilgrimages however. In 1990, almost 1500 people were killed in a similar stampede. Anyway, no more sadness!
WHAT IS EID?
There are 2 celebrations of Eid throughout the Islamic calendar. Eid is a Lunar holiday, which means it’s different each year depending on the moon. Each year, Eid-al-fitr, the Eid that comes after Ramadan, is a celebration of another Ramadan gone and everyone has feasts and gets together with friends and family! The second Eid, Eid-al-adha, is the Eid that comes on the 10th day of the Islamic month, Dhu al-Hijjah. This is the Eid where some Muslims, try to make a pilgramage (Hajj) to Mecca. This is one of the 5 Pillars of Islam.
Islam originated in approximately 630 AD in the Gregorian Calendar. This is when the Prophet Muhammad, had a vision from God telling him that there is one God. He started a religion called Islam, and it spread across the Arabian Peninsula, and Northern Africa.
